BCC&EDA - Success in 60!

BCC&EDA - Success in 60!

LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED BY HUNTINGTON BANK!

Workshop Title: Preented by Jared Lee from Huntington Bank
“Fraud Alert: Protecting Yourself and Your Business from Scams and Identity Theft”
Workshop Description:
In today’s digital and connected world, fraud is more sophisticated and widespread than ever. This workshop will explore the many faces of fraud—from identity theft and financial scams to deceptive tactics like phishing, vishing, and smishing. Participants will learn how fraudsters manipulate emotions and urgency to exploit individuals through sweetheart scams, fake family emergencies, and business impersonation. Real-world examples will help attendees recognize red flags and respond with confidence.
We’ll also dive into the risks associated with different payment methods, including checks, ACH transfers, debit cards, and credit cards. Each method carries unique vulnerabilities, and understanding these can help individuals and businesses make safer financial decisions. Special attention will be given to elder financial abuse, including misuse of joint accounts and powers of attorney, and how to safeguard loved ones from exploitation.
Summary of Key Points:
  • Types of Fraud: Learn the differences between phishing (email/web), vishing (phone), and smishing (text), and how to spot them.
  • Emotional Scams: Understand how fraudsters use romance and family emergencies to manipulate victims.
  • Payment Method Risks: Explore how checks, ACH, debit, and credit cards can be exploited—and how to protect yourself.
  • Business Vulnerabilities: Discover how fraud affects businesses and what steps can be taken to reduce exposure.
  • Golden Rules for Safety: Never share sensitive information with unsolicited contacts, verify sources independently, and avoid gift card scams.
